I am not a human resources person. But if I were a recruiter, I would definitely look at a diploma degree, and if all else were equal, I would prefer the candidate with a diploma. In reality, there are no two equivalent people except in their diplomas.
I hold a degree higher than doctorate degree in science, other than engineering, and at present I am a second-year university student in computer science (CS). I feel somewhat exposed in ugly outfit if I am not a degree holder. I like having a degree in science as it helps me stand out strongly against the rest of the world even if not analysed in curriculum level, I like to hold valuable degrees. I have transferred many skills and much knowledge to the CS field from my former field.
Could all people have the same comparable skills? No. I am among the world's top people in my former science field, not because I learned narrow specialist skills, but as a creator who combines various knowledge to create new knowledge. Not all the people who have the same diploma can transfer valuable skills to all fields. I am a rare mind who does not just memorize mathematical formulas like a parrot but applies them to any problem, using selecting, matching them appropriately.
Although my former field is not engineering, my university-level mathematical conception helps me to learn all CS curriculum as clear concepts.
My math knowledge is really applicable mathematics, meaning I can use mathematics in any field as a tool. I dig out any mathematical tool on my own and see where they are needed in other scientific fields. This turned out to be a genetic brain trend, not easily gained by education.
I tell this: anyone can know the genetics of their brain and follow the appropriate path. Sure, my brain is at the top to improve any science, but so rare, there are many openings in science but people like me are rare and not enough to fill openings.
Google, Microsoft, and AI have come to such good days not because of narrow parrot-memorizer specialist people, but brainy people like me who improved science. Average people can be replaced easily but top brainy people drives the science and not replaced easily.
People like me, brainy, are so rare that the job openings need those less brainy people still. Only thirty percent or less of projects need such essential brainy people, while the remaining projects are for average-brained people. But since average-brained people are too many, one should look at themselves as to why they should be preferred for dome unbrainy jobs. Unbrainy average people may be preferred because they are loved ones, they are promising to be good parents, they work for low salaries, etc.
Today's world is such that average people like to abuse brainy people too much. Rather than staying in underpaid jobs in their brainy science field, they go after high-paying unscientific daily jobs. They are tired of fighting against those who are jealous of them and try to harm them. They are enemies of humanity by ignoring their superiority. Yes, there is a class of brainy versus less brainy in all fields, and the brainy people are even 2 out of a hundred, very rare.
AI technology can never replace brainy people. But AI technology will need fewer average people. Also, AI technology may make some average abilities more important.
I do not believe that those who are not talented in applied mathematics should abondon CS. Because typing fast is advantage in certain CS fields. Keeping concentration in five hours same or durability is advantage in certain projects regardless of being very brainy.
Also willing to learn new knowledge is advantage. Brainy people atr the best to learn any CS knowledge, that is their characteristics, they do not see any limitations in gaining any new knowledge. But there are many companies who needs people who use a narrow knowledge for a few years, not asks their employees to gain new knowledge. Thus do not worry there are there enough people at sufficient number who beat average CS people.
The major obstacles are always against those who are super brainy. Since most average people are jealous of super brainy people and likes academic dishonesty such as question bank thefting, I do not believe that CS is a field to avoid for an average person who is not even has any degree in CS science.
