My AI Adventure: SWE 1.5, Claude, and ChatGPT in IDEs
Using Free Versions: The Reality
First of all, I want to clarify that I’m using the free versions of these AI tools. They are too expensive for my budget at the moment.
I rely on AI SWE 1.5 on my local WinSurf IDE because it’s free and can be used without restrictions. Claude, on the other hand, has limited free usage, so I can’t fully use it all month. ChatGPT agent as IDE AI, also has usage limits depending on the plan.
Even with these limitations, I’ve developed a workflow that allows me to leverage the strengths of each AI effectively.
Discovering Claude agent in Mid-2025
I first discovered Claude agent around mid-2025 on GitHub IDE, even noted its name as a super AI, to remember its exact name. At the time, I noticed it was just as capable as ChatGPT agent but had a unique edge when integrated with IDEs like GitHub’s online IDE and VS Code.
In 2025 On GitHub and Replit IDE, Claude agent quickly proved unbeatable for coding tasks, especially in scenarios where other AI models got stuck. These problem cases were less than 1% of my program coding, but they were enough to block a full product deployment. Claude agent touch in the GitHub IDE could solve these stubborn bugs, whereas most other AI agent couldn’t.
Using free ChatGPT agent in IDEs
For almost a year, I’ve been using ChatGPT agent in IDEs such as VS Code, where it pops up directly in the IDE. It’s incredibly helpful for guidance, explanations, and small adjustments.
- ChatGPT as IDE agent is not completely free on WinSurf IDE, unlike SWE 1.5 AI agent.
- I often upload my completed SWE 1.5 apps from VS Code, to free conversational chatGPT indicating that I finished the app but 1% of the bugs remain to find.
- Conversitional ChatGPT cannot directly fix these bugs, since free chatGPT do not have IDE agent format, but writes prompts for SWE 1.5 AI agent to solve the bugs of the app, which then SWE 1.5 agent successfully solves the issues.
In this way, even conversational ChatGPT is excellent for guiding stubborn bugs, while Claude agent on its own can both solve any bug and creates a complete product compared to SWE 1.5 agent. Conversional free ChatGPT even without IDE environment provides excellent direction for SWE 1.5 agent and other AI models. Conversational always free ChatGPT (this the ChatGPT anyone knows) do not need any application-folder but needs only, ie 15 files codes of the application to find any bug.
SWE 1.5 AI agent: Free and Powerful
Since Claude AI agent is not free all month, I rely heavily on SWE 1.5 agent on my local PC. Despite being free, SWE 1.5 handles almost everything effortlessly. Occasionally (less than 1% of the time), SWE 1.5 gets stuck, but I upload those small apps to GitHub, where Claude agent quickly resolves the remaining issues.
The Workflow: SWE 1.5 Meets Claude
My workflow is simple yet highly efficient:
- Develop locally with Windsurf SWE 1.5 agent– most tasks are completed quickly without any payment.
- Upload small problem apps to GitHub (GitHub's VS Code) to Claude agent– for rare cases where SWE 1.5 gets stuck.
- Claude agent fixes the bugs – its human-like reasoning and final touches make all the difference.
- Conversational free ChatGPT assists – provides guidance and directions when needed.
Why Claude AI agent Stands Out
Claude agent is truly the most human-like AI I’ve used. Its ability to solve problems, refine solutions, and provide finishing touches is unmatched. While other AI agent models are competent, agent AI Claude’s efficiency in complex problem-solving sets it apart.
Conclusion: Combining Free and Paid AI for Maximum Productivity
In summary:
- Claude agent→ Best for final touches, bug fixes, and complex problem-solving (expensive, limited free usage).
- SWE 1.5 agent→ Free, comes with Windsurf, and handles most programming development tasks.
- Conversational ChatGPT → Helpful guide for directions and explanations (the ChatGPT IDE agent is not free, unlike the always-free conversational ChatGPT).
Using a combination of free and paid AI agent tools allows me to maximize productivity while keeping costs low. SWE 1.5 agent handles the heavy lifting, and Claude agent ensures perfection where needed, even with usage limitations.
Note: When I say ‘AI agent,’ I mean the AI tool I use in a coding IDE, such as VS Code IDE, WindSurf IDE, Eclipse IDE, JetBrains IDE etc.
Although the program folder structure shown in the IDE is only a reflection of the AI-written code, I like to see every application as a folder structure.
Dreaming or Creativity-wise, Claude and ChatGPT are similar, but Claude stands out in bug fixing. SWE 1.5 is a lucky free option that carries most of the workload. Together, they form a “team” where each plays a different role, and you act like the conductor managing them.

Claude her zaman ücretsiz olmadığı için mühendislik ürünlerimde ana yükü SWE 1.5 ajan taşıyor. Yerel PC’de neredeyse tüm işleri sorunsuz bedava hallediyor. Sadece %1 gibi küçük bir oranda takıldığı durumlarda uygulamayı GitHub’a yükleyip, GitHub ın kendi VS Code undaki Claude ajana bırakıyorum. Claude bu noktada son dokunuşları yapıyor.

Neden Claude Öne Çıkıyor
Claude ajanı, insan benzeri akıl yürütme yeteneğiyle diğerlerinden ayrılıyor. Karmaşık sorunları çözme ve ürünü rafine etme konusunda benzersiz. SWE 1.5 güçlü ve bedava bir iş gücü sağlarken, Claude ajanı son rötuşları yaparak ürünü kusursuz hale getiriyor.

- Claude ajanı → Karmaşık sorunlar ve son dokunuşlar için en iyi, fakat ücretsiz kullanımı sınırlı.
- SWE 1.5 ajanı → Ücretsiz, yerel kullanımda güçlü ve ana geliştirme yükünü taşıyor.
- Konuşma formatındaki ChatGPT → Yönlendirme ve açıklamalar için her zaman ücretsiz.
Ücretsiz ve sınırlı ücretli AI ajanlarını bir arada kullanarak hem maliyeti düşük tutuyor hem de maksimum verimlilik elde ediyorum.
Yaratıcılık açısından Claude ve ChatGPT benzer, fakat hata çözmede Claude öne çıkıyor. SWE 1.5 ise ücretsiz güçlü bir seçenek. Üçlü birlikte bir “takım” gibi çalışıyor, geliştirici de onları yöneten bir orkestra şefi gibi.
